Kateriin Rikken (b. 1983) studied glass art at the Estonian Academy of Arts (BA 2005; MA 2022) and glassblowing and design at the Royal Danish Academy (BA 2010). Her dual background as an both an artist and a designer is also reflected in her work – versatile and often stepping outside of her comfort zone, constantly searching for nuance and diverse means of expression. She has experimented with found objects and materials, and is inspired by various fields from poetry to chemistry and physics.
From 2012 to 2014, Kateriin ran a private gallery focused on glass art, GaleriiPINK, which promoted Estonian glass art to the local audience. Influenced by this experience, Kateriin is interested in researching and supporting the well-being and methods of glass artists. She has organized glassblowing courses with international instructors in Estonia, coordinated art residencies in Sweden, and contributed to various events aimed at artists.
Since 2009, Kateriin has worked as a visiting lecturer at the Faculty of Glass Art and Design of the Estonian Academy of Arts. She has been a member of the working group of the Estonian Qualifications Authority, which compiled the national curriculum for Glassblower Assistant and developed the professional standard Glassblower assistant, level 4. In 2014, the Glassblowers assistant specialty was opened at the Olustvere School of Service and Rural Economy, where Kateriin worked as a teacher until 2024.
Kateriin Rikken is simultaneously active in creative work: she features in solo and group exhibitions in Estonia and abroad. Since 2011, Kateriin can be found in her private studio in Tallinn, Pelgulinn.
Her works are in the collections of Estonian and Danish museums as well as in the hands of Estonian and foreign private collections.
